Calling All Kids (young and old!)

I was a bit of a tomboy growing up. I loved to play with cars, the dirt and pretty much anything else that boys played with. Don't get me wrong, I had my fair share of Barbies, My Little Ponies and Cabbage Patch dolls too. In fact, a lot of my barbies would ride my cars! Anyways, what I'm trying to get to is that if you're child loves trucks, cars and anything else on wheels, they are going to love a new event this weekend in Northwest Arkansas. It's called Touch a Truck and gives kids the opportunity to explore, climb and actually get in the driver's seat of various trucks. Here are just a few of the vehicles that will be there: Dale Earnhardt, Sr. race car, an ambulance, fire trucks, police cars, construction equipment, helicopter, school bus, motorcycles, the Wal-Mart Logistics Emergency Response Truck and I can't forget to mention the 40/29 news truck. There will also be a station for parents to have their car seat checked to make sure it's installed properly and a booth for fingerprinting. If you're interested, here's the information.

I should mention that 40/29 is a sponsor of this event and I'm a member of the Junior League, but even so, this is a great event that you won't want to miss! See you there rain or shine!

You paid how much?

My husband called me this morning to tell me how much it cost him to fill up his tank... let's just say it could buy formula for almost a month. On my way into work this morning, I noticed gas prices had jumped 14 cents from just a couple of days ago when I filled up. Then, just a little bit ago I read an article on CNN.com about how gas prices could reach $4 a gallon this summer... please say it isn't so! Earlier this week on Sunrise, we actually had a story about a gas station in Orlando, FL that was charging $3.99 for a gallon of regular unleaded. AAA says gas prices are about to rise even higher because of oil reserves damaged during hurricane Katrina. According to the analyst in the CNN article, he says we'll have no trouble beating the record high right after Katrina of $3.05 per gallon. If you're looking for some ways to save money, AAA has some pretty neat tools on their website... you can find out how much gas stations near you are charging for gas, or find out what it's going to cost you on your next road trip. Equal Pay Day

It's been an on going fight for decades... equal pay for equal work. Each year, one Tuesday in April is designated as Equal Pay Day by the National Committee on Pay Equity. Today is that day for 2007 and marks the day it takes a woman to reach the amount of money a man makes by the end of December. The idea is that women make so much less than men, on average, they have to work longer (4 months longer!) to reach the same amount of pay. The committee also says it takes a woman until Tuesday to reach the same amount of money a man made the previous Friday.. hence Equal Pay Day falling on a Tuesday each year. According to the 2005 U.S. Census, the average woman earned 77% of the average man's salary. It wasn't until 1964 that a Civil Rights Bill passed, banning employment discrimination against women. There has been a lot of work since then to make sure there is equal pay, but there is still a ways to go. If you would like to learn more about the history of equal pay initiatives, just visit Pay Equity's website

TTYL

Maybe I should start practicing my texting skills because I think I am the slowest text messager out there! I had no idea you could actually win huge amounts of money by texting the fastest. A 13 year old from Pennsylvania recently won $25,000 for spelling supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins in 15 seconds. I'm not sure I could spell it correctly in that amount of time, much less text it. IMHO, texting is taking over our way of communicating with others. It's being used in some really interesting ways though. Just last week, we reported that the University of Arkansas was looking into starting a mass text message warning system in case there is an emergency on campus. On the other hand, text messaging could be our downfall as well because it's being used instead of a friendly phone call, much like email has replaced hand-written letters or phone calls. I'm guilty of it... who isn't these days? It's so much easier to send out an email or quick text message and let the person reply at their own convenience compared to actually picking up the phone and calling someone. It amazes me that I used to spend hours as a teenager on the phone with my BFF talking about nothing and everything at the same time. Having a 13 year old win the fastest text message contest just proves how much teens text these days. The young girl said she sends over 8,000 messages a month! OMG! I send maybe 10 to 15 texts a month and that's on a busy month! I guess I need to start practicing my texting skills soon before I get left behind!

BTW, I'm such a terrible text messager that I actually had to look up the texting abbreviations before using them above. In the process, I found some interesting ones. So parents, visit the following web address to see what your kids might be saying (typing) right in front of you.

I'll take two please

Some mornings, I wish I could hit the snooze button about 10 times, but I know I can't. If I can just get to that coffee maker, then I'm set. I've actually been trying to cut back on the amount of caffeine I drink in the morning, and I think I might have found a solution! This is no joke... a British company has actually come up with a way to wake you up in the morning without drinking any caffeine. It's called Shower Shock and is caffeinated soap. Each wash you're basically getting the same amount of caffeine as two cups of coffee. According to the company's web site, the soap has peppermint oil in it and you can get your caffeine buzz after about 5 minutes in the shower... but what happens if you like longer showers.. can you get the shakes from too much caffeine? Hmmm... maybe this isn't such a good idea after all!

How much do you love your job?

I love my job, but would I love it even more if I was a firefighter? A new survey out of about 27,000 people across the U.S. says clergy and firefighters are more satisfied with their jobs than any other profession. Physical therapists, authors, and teachers also topped the list. In fact, most of the jobs in the top 10 were jobs that involved helping other people, so if you're looking for a new job, maybe you should take that into consideration. What I found surprising is that only 33% of people surveyed actually said they were really happy; 47% were at least satisfied with their current job... but what about everyone else? That leaves a lot of people who just don't like what they're doing... and according to the survey, those people apparently work in clothing and furniture sales as well as restaurants. Waiters and waitresses were at the very bottom of the list in job satisfaction. So if your profession is at the bottom of the list, maybe you should consider one of the following careers...

Top 10 most satisfying jobs and the percentage of subjects who said they were very satisfied with the job:

Clergy—87 percent percent
Firefighters—80 percent percent
Physical therapists—78 percent percent
Authors—74 percent
Special education teachers—70 percent
Teachers—69 percent
Education administrators—68 percent
Painters and sculptors—67 percent
Psychologists—67 percent
Security and financial services salespersons—65 percent
Operating engineers—64 percent
Office supervisors—61 percent

People who scored high on the happiness scale had the following jobs:

Clergy
Firefighters
Transportation ticket and reservation agents
Housekeepers and butlers
Hardware/building supplies salespersons
Architects
Mechanics and repairers
Special education teachers
Actors and directors
Science technicians

For those jobs right in the middle.. people who didn't love or hate their jobs.. were police officers, news reporters, and registered nurses.

Take a hike.. or a walk

It's the return of spring! The weather is finally turning around, which means we can all head outdoors to enjoy it again. There are several opportunities around the area in the upcoming days that will get you up from your couch or desk and outside for a good cause. Today is National Walk at Lunch day where employees are being encouraged to get up and move. Many local employers are encouraging this because it promotes a healthier workforce... what better reason (excuse) to get out of the office for a little while and stretch your legs!

Tomorrow is the first regional Day of Caring. People from all across the area will be working on projects for United Way agencies. You can do anything from plant flowers, to paint walls, to help area kids.

Here are the meeting places if you would like to take part in the April 19th Day of Caring.

Fort Smith - Ft. Smith Riverfront Park, 7:30 am
Siloam Springs - Henry Park, 7:30 am
Bentonville - NWACC Bogle Plaza, 7:30 am
Fayetteville - NWA Mall, 8 am

Another event where you can get out and enjoy the nice weather is at the Ozark Race for the Cure in Fayetteville going on this Saturday. There is a 5K run/walk that starts at 8 am and a 1 mile fun run/walk that starts at 8:30. If you would like to sign up, just look for the Think Pink Week/Race for the Cure link on our Sunrise web page.

Please pass the antihistamine

I came across a Forbes.com list today of the worst 100 cities for spring allergies and guess what.. we are surrounded by cities in the top 10. Tulsa, Dallas, St. Louis, Little Rock.. the list goes on. I've never had too bad of allergies, but they seem to be a little worse this year for some reason. I remember when I was a little girl, my mom took me to be tested. If you've ever been tested, you know they prick you with little pins all over your back and arm. Well, I was little enough, I believed them when they told me they were drawing a picture of Mickey Mouse on my back. I was so disappointed and a little mad to be honest (I was around 5 after all) when I saw it was just lines of little red dots. I still got a sticker when I left the office, so all was well. After doing a little research today, I found out that pollen counts are higher in the morning. So if you're an allergy sufferer as well, they suggested taking that run or walk in the afternoon or evening to keep your symptoms at bay. There's nothing like a nice spring breeze blowing through the house, but that's only making things worse, at least for the time being. All that pollen is just blowing right into my house, so until we get a good rain to wash it all away, I'll just have to enjoy the breeze from my fan!

A little message for do-it-yourselfers

There are about a dozen projects we need to do around the house this spring. The first being adding on to our deck. My husband just got a compressor for Easter with a nail gun soon to follow, but a statistic on nail gun injuries may make me rethink this project! According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention there are about 37,000 nail gun injuries each year.. yikes! Just in the past 15 years, nail gun injuries for do-it-yourselfers have risen 200%. The picture posted above was taken in 2004 of a trained construction worker who got shot in the head multiple times by a nail gun. Amazingly, he made a full recovery. I'd like to think we're pretty proficient when it comes to do-it-yourself projects, but if that can happen to someone trained in the business, then who knows what can happen in your own backyard. The CDC is trying to spread the word about the dangers of nail guns and make sure users are being extra cautious. So, if you have a home improvement project planned that requires a nail gun, be careful.. and be sure the keep the pets indoors!

I miss Spring!

Where did spring go? It's almost cruel and unusual punishment that we got a hint of spring a couple of weeks ago and now we're back to such cold and rainy weather... can anyone say wintertime blues! Everyone I've seen the past few days at work, at meetings, even at the grocery store, has been wondering where spring went. My husband and I took advantage of the nice weather a few weeks ago, like many other people, and started planting flowers and setting out plants on the deck... which all look a bit wilted, if not dead at this point. Does the money back guarantee work on plants that were killed by frost? Wouldn't that be nice! With all of the spring festivals, races, and other events planned, it sure would be nice for it to actually feel like spring! Speaking of springtime events, in case you missed it this morning, we had Rick Schaffer from Champions for Kids on talking about RazorFest. The 3rd annual event is going on this Saturday at Razorback Stadium. It's a great family event where you can meet former and current Razorback players, coaches and cheerleaders. There are also tons of activities for the kids. It's being held rain or shine, warm or cold. It's a great way to show support for Champions for Kids (which supports area non-profits for kids) and Razorback athletics. For more information, just look under the links section of the Sunrise page.

How to pack like a pro

The countdown to summer vacation is on! If you can relate to this picture.. then keep reading! In response to a comment I received on an earlier post, I'm going to share my secrets of how to be an expert packer. I had mentioned I can actually pack for a 2 week (really 10 days.. but close enough, right?) vacation in a carry on bag.. so here's what I did. I actually did some research on packing before the trip because I was determined not to take more than one carry on bag and a purse. My husband also packed everything (or should I say, I also packed everything for my husband) in a separate carry on bag.. and if you know me, you know what kind of an amazing feat this was! We were traveling through Italy for our anniversary and didn't want a lot a luggage anyways since we were going to be on and off planes, trains and automobiles for several days. I first picked a color scheme. I went with brown.. everything I packed went with brown shoes, accessories, etc. I only took must-have items.. no hairdryers (I made sure the hotels had them in the rooms before we left) and no Chi iron. It's just too much trouble packing converters and everything else when traveling overseas, so it's just easier to leave it all at home. I also made sure my shirts, jackets, and pants were all interchangeable so it looked like I had several different outfits with only a few pieces -- that way I didn't look the same in all of my pictures! I also rolled my clothes instead of folding them. This kept wrinkles to a minimum and I could fit a lot more in my bag. The hardest part for me was limiting the number of shoes I packed. I only took two pairs, one pair of brown boots (flats of course for the cobblestone streets) and a pair of stylish sneakers for comfort. I also brought along a small bottle of Woolite so I could do a little bit of washing in the hotel sink. It was definitely worth it packing lightly and I didn't miss anything that I left at home... and since you always end up coming home with more than you left with, it's nice to start the trip off light! I hope this helps with your summer packing problems. Bon voyage!

Who's the daddy?

It's official.. he told you so. Larry Birkhead is the father of Anna Nicole Smith's daughter, Dannielynn. There is one question that remains though, now that this soap opera has come to an end... what celebrity will become the main headline for the gossip magazines now? Anna Nicole's death, however tragic and sad, dominated the headlines for almost 2 months. I don't think I'm alone when I say that I was tired of hearing about the details surrounding her death and baby drama (even though secretly I really did want to know who the daddy was.. just don't tell anyone, OK?) What really makes me sad is this sweet, 7 month old baby girl has had more drama in her life than most others who are decades older. Unfortunately for Dannielynn, I think the drama is far from over. She stands to inherit millions of dollars from her mother, which will keep her in the news for years to come. All of the Anna Nicole drama kind of makes me miss Britney and Kevin.. whatever happened to them anyways?

Finally, some happy Razorback news!

Have you heard, the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team is #6 in the country? How exciting! I love baseball and usually this time of year I'm up to my ears in baseball news, but not this year. Just about all of Hog country has been caught up in the never-ending basketball season, including myself. I just don't want people to forget (myself included) how good our baseball team is and how much fun it is to sit in the beautiful Baum Stadium cheering for the Hogs. This weekend, the Hogs play a 3 game series against Mississippi State at Baum Stadium. What a great way to spend some time with your family for the holiday, even if it's going to be a little cold. If you can't make it out this weekend, they'll be playing Florida next weekend, so let's get out there and call those Hogs! See you at the ball field!

Who ya gonna call?

When I fly, I like to dig in to a good book, catch up on the latest celebrity gossip in whatever magazine was left in the seat back or even catch a little shut-eye if the flight is long. I definitely don't want to hear someone going on and on about their problems with their friends still on the ground. Tuesday, the FCC decided not to allow people to use cell phones on flights. They had been considering lifting the cell phone ban since 2004. Their decision really had nothing to do with passengers and their thoughts on the issue, but instead technical issues with cell phone frequencies. No matter how they came to the decision, I think it's a good move. With all of the technology available today, BlackBerries, cell phones, etc., we just can't seem to get away from work. So by keeping the cell phone ban in place while in the air, maybe, just maybe, we can get some time to ourselves to just relax. That's not such a bad thing is it?

Maybe I'll switch to apple juice

There are two things I love in the morning, my glass of orange juice and my milk for cereal or cream of wheat. So I was not too happy to find out both milk and orange juice prices are expected to increase this year. Bad weather in both California and Florida is causing the orange crop to be one of the smallest in 20 years... hence the rise in prices. Milk prices on the other hand are going up because the cost of corn is going up. It's costing more to feed the cows, so we're going to be paying more for our daily dose of calcium. By the way, the report also says gas prices are on the rise, but we already knew that didn't we?

To drive, or to fly?

With summer vacation coming up soon, it's a question a lot of people will have to decide. Should I drive and spend an arm and a leg on gas or should I fly and risk delayed flights and lost luggage? A new report out today says more passengers are being bumped, more luggage is being lost and fewer flights are on time, but strangely enough, customer complaints have stabilized. I guess we're just getting used to the problems. I for one, have had my luggage lost, if only for a short time. Luckily, it was near the end of my trip and I had my bag (ok, 3 bags!) by the next morning. Despite the minor inconvenience, I did learn a valuable skill from the mishap -- how to be an "expert" packer. On my next vacation, I packed for 2 weeks all in a small carry-on bag. No one thought I could do it, but I did and have continued to be a smart packer ever since. No more lost luggage for me (and no more bags just for shoes!).

Now that I have a small child in tow, I think flying is out for any upcoming vacations.. at least this year. So the decision to drive or to fly will be easy for me. It's amazing how much stuff you have to pack for a baby. I still stick to my small carry-on bag rule for me, but that's only so I can make room in the trunk for all of the baby gear.

Whatever you decide, I hope your travels are safe and your luggage makes it there with you! If you'd like to share your travel stories or your thoughts about the airline study, just look for the link 'Airline Quality Report' under the discussion board section of our Sunrise web page.
