Spanking Illegal?

This story was making waves yesterday with a lot of parents. Lawmakers in Massachusetts are considering making it illegal for parents to spank their children. Growing up, just the thought of being spanked scared me straight! My punishments were usually time outs or having something taken away, like a toy or the TV as I got older. My all time favorite punishment that I just might use one day was having my door taken off because I slammed it one too many times! After not having a door for a while, I learned my lesson and never slammed it again! My friends still reminisce about coming over for a sleepover and having no door... it makes for a good laugh now, but as a 12 year old, I didn't think it was so funny! Back to the corporal punishment issue now... Many people, including the nurse who wrote the bill, view corporal punishment as child abuse. While many parents have already decided not to spank their children because of personal reasons, they still argue that the government would be taking too much control over what parents do in their own homes. Corporal punishment is already banned at school in 29 states, but all 50 states legally allow parents to spank their children. I'm sure a lot of people will be keeping an eye on how this case turns out in Massachusetts because if it passes, other states might follow suit.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas...

I have been waiting for this day since December 26th, 2006. It's the day Christmas music takes over local radio stations. I'm so thankful to have a little break from the same old songs we've been listening to for months with a little Christmas cheer. From now until December 25th.. it's Christmas music all day, every day in my car... so if you have to ride with me, get ready to sing, "Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas...."

Happy Black Friday and be safe while shopping today! Don't forget to check out our homepage for the latest shopping tips and news.

Don't forget the troops

In case you missed our Tech Bytes segment this morning, I wanted to share this information with you. There's a new, instant way to say thanks to the troops this Thanksgiving. The Department of Defense is encouraging people to text words of encouragement to troops serving overseas. The service members will be able to read and respond to the messages through military computers. To send your thanks, all you have to do is text a brief message to 89279.

This is the time of year everyone starts to reflect on the year and be thankful for what they have been given. There are many things to be thankful for this year... good health, a happy and loving family and good friends. I feel very blessed to be able to share this holiday with both my husband's family and my own (plus we get two turkey dinners!!) If you're traveling this holiday, I hope your trip is a safe one. Just remember to pack your umbrella and your patience since 37 million people will be traveling with you!

Brain Teasers

We wrapped up our Living Longer series Friday with a look at ways to keep your brain strong throughout your life. Doctors recommend exercising your bring, much like you would your body. Memory Center Director, Dr. Stephen Gemmell, says you should do brain exercises 3 days a week for an hour or two a day. Exercises could include doing crossword puzzles, playing games, an instrument, going back to school or working on the computer. He also stresses that diet and exercise are also important to keeping your brain healthy. If you're looking to go back to school, then look no further than the College at the Crossings in Bella Vista. The college is an extension of NorthWest Arkansas Community College and opened August 2004. It was created to provide higher educational opportunities to adults 55 and older. Classes offered at the center range from arts and crafts, to music and genealogy. To learn more, just visit the College at the Crossings website.

Another great facility in this area to offer educational programs for the elderly, is the Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education. It's a satellite of the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging at UAMS. There are examination rooms and rehab facilities there, but also an education wing. To learn more about the programs offered at the Schmieding Center, just visit this site.

Also, earlier this week, I blogged about the Adult Wellness Center in Rogers. That's a great place to get together with friends for a card game or learn a new craft. You can read more about the Adult Wellness Center by reading my blog entry from Wednesday. Local senior centers are also a great place to exercise your brain. Many of the centers offer arts and crafts, dancing and card games. Just call you local senior center to learn more.

Don't forget, you can catch the entire living longer series on our Sunrise page, just look under the video section.

Exercising to Extend Your Life

In part 3 of our Living Longer series, we told you why exercising is so important when it comes to living a longer life. Adult Wellness Center Director Keri Wilkinson says strength training is key so you can continue doing the activities you enjoy throughout your life. Resistance bands are a great way to get in some strength training if you can't make it to the gym or you are traveling. They are light, easy to pack and stash away in your desk at work easily. Your goal for cardiovascular exercises should be at least 30 minutes of exercise, 3 days a week. Of course, as you age, you lose muscle mass and your bones can become weaker, so if you're concerned about what types of exercises would be good for you, Wilkinson says that walking and water aerobics are both easy on the joints.

If you're 50 or older , live anywhere in the area, and looking for a great place to work out at a low price, the Adult Wellness Center in Rogers is the place for you. I had never been to the facility before doing this story and was thoroughly impressed with the facility, quality of the workout equipment and variety of classes being offered. I only wish I could find a gym like that! The city of Rogers built and maintains the facility with the help of grants and local taxes, which is why the cost to join is us $25 a year. There are small fees to join some of the specialty classes though. They offer everything from your general workouts, to line dancing classes, yoga, pilates and water aerobics. Besides for the exercise portion of the facility, they also offer jewelry making classes, health education classes and pottery. If you'd like to learn more about the Adult Wellness Center, just visit the Adult Wellness Center website.

Super Foods

In part 2 of my Living Longer series, Dietitian Cissy Wilmoth mentioned 'super foods' should also be a part of your well-balanced diet. Certain foods, like walnuts and oats, are considered super foods because of the antioxidants, nutrients, anti-cancer compounds, fiber, and omega 3 fatty acids they contain. These nutrient rich foods can help our immune system, which in turn, helps us fight disease. Here's a list of the best super foods offering health protection that should be included in your diet:

Beans
Blueberries
Broccoli
Oats
Oranges
Pumpkin
Salmon
Soy
Spinach
Tea (green or black)
Tomatoes
Turkey
Walnuts
Yogurt

You can view the entire Living Longer series on the web. Just look in our video section on our Sunrise page (you can find it right above the link for this blog).

Hope you love re-runs...

because that's all we might soon see. The Writers Guild of America cut off talks last night for a new contract, which means we could start to see lots of reruns if they don't reach an agreement soon. Networks say they do have a plan in place (i.e. reality shows, news programs, etc.) to fill the air time, but late night talk shows will be the hardest hit. Other shows already have several scripts written to last into the new year, but after that... who knows. If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know I love my sitcoms, as many of us do.... so let's hope for a new contract agreement soon! I like many people, hate that long summer break between new shows, so let's hope we don't have a mid-season break too.
