Can you please spare a square?

First there was the electronic paper towel dispenser that only let out one sheet at a time with the wave of your hand... now, believe it or not, there is a toilet paper dispenser that is limiting the number of 'squares' dispensed at a time. The new t.p. dispenser only allows you 5 sheets... seriously... it that really a good idea to limit the number of sheets you can use? This isn't just an invention that might hit the market, it's already out there and it's being manufactured by a well known company that makes dispensers and bath tissues. The idea behind the invention is, of course, to cut back on waste. The company says if people used just 5 sheets, it would cut back on toilet paper use by 20%. Here at work, it is a rare occasion that our paper towel dispenser is actually working... not having a paper towel is one thing, but not having toilet paper? What happens if these electric dispensers go down when you really need them and there is no one around to ask for a spare square? In my opinion, some things just don't need improvements.

Wasting Time

How do you spend your time at work? It seems most of us aren't spending it working. A survey conducted by Salary.com recently found that most Americans spend or waste about 20% of their workday doing other, non-work related tasks, like checking their email, playing computer games or gossiping with co-workers. This got me thinking about how I spend my day (and in case the bosses are reading this... it is spent working the entire time... no really.. I'm serious.) Really though, looking back, how long does it take to really get working in the morning when you first get to work? If you think about it, all the time asking people how their night was, how their family is doing, etc. really adds up. I've never really thought about it, but I can see how all that time talking can add up. If we didn't chat with our co-workers though, it would be kind of a depressing day.. stuck in a cubicle all day without anyone to talk to. I think I would be more unproductive that way because I'd be unhappy at work... so keep on chatting it up... research has proven that happier employees are healthier and more productive!

You Asked YouTube, now you decide

In a first of a kind debate, Democratic Presidential candidates will sound off on a variety of issues tonight... issues that YOU want to know more about. The CNN-YouTube debate is being held tonight in South Carolina, but the questions will be from folks all over the country or world for that matter. People have been submitting questions through the YouTube website. I've been watching some of the questions posted on their website and of course, some are really silly, but there are some that are very intriguing and well thought out. Not to mention, since these are videos, they are very visual, so you really understand why these questions or causes are important to the person asking them. For example, these two brothers are asking a question about health care and Alzheimer's research as they stand there feeding their mother who is in a wheelchair, suffering from many ailments, such as Alzheimer's. It really makes me glad to know that people are taking this debate seriously and are submitting some very thoughtful questions. Just check out the debate at 7 p.m. ET. tonight on CNN or YouTube.com to see some of the questions for yourself.

Neti Pot

Last night we aired a story on a drug-free way to reduce your allergy or sinus problems. It's called a Neti Pot. It works by pouring a solution of salt and water into your nose using a Neti Pot. I've never had too bad of a problem with allergies or sinuses, but early spring is a killer. Ever since I saw it on Oprah last year, I've wanted to try it out because I've never been one to take a lot of medications, especially antihistamines. They seem to dry out everything, which is great, but then leave me a little thirsty when trying to read the news for 2 hours. So I want to know, have you guys ever tried a Neti Pot? If so, what did you think? The story says it might not work for everyone, but they are pretty inexpensive, so it might be worth trying. If you want to actually see a Neti Pot being used and learn more about it, just visit our video section on the main page. Look for the story that has the caption 'Allergy Relief Without Drugs'.

Do you sudoku?

Sudoku has become a ginorous hit in the U.S. and across the world... so much so that it has officially been added to Merriam-Webster's newly updated edition of the dictionary. Ginormous was added as well... as were 98 other words. A few other words now in the dictionary -- crunk, speed dating, Bollywood and smackdown. Merriam-Webster officials say for words to make it into the dictionary, they have to have promise of sticking around for a while.

One more thing... just because these words are in the dictionary, doesn't mean they are in spellcheck though... my computer went crazy with misspellings when checking this blog entry for errors!

11 more days

If you're a regular watcher of Sunrise, then you probably already know that I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. I didn't start reading the series though until my mom and sister told me about it back in 2001. I thought they were crazy to read and enjoy a children's series so much... then I read it and completely understood the love for the books. Not only is it getting kids to read (not to mention read 700 page books!), but they are really entertaining. The 5th movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix starts tonight with a midnight showing. A Sunrise co-worker is actually going to the movie and then heading straight to work.. with a full report/review for me! ;) I'll hopefully be able to watch it in a couple of weeks when we have a free weekend and babysitter. Until then, I'll just have to wait patiently... just as I am for the 7th and final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which is to be released July 21st. If your kids are eagerly awaiting the release of the new book as well, then they might be interested in a few activities going on at the Fayetteville Public Library to celebrate the book's release. Here's the information from the library's website. The day begins with a Harry Potter parade at 9:30 a.m. on the Fayetteville square. Students can dress as their favorite Harry Potter character and parade from the square to the library. The library will then host a Harry Potter release party for elementary students from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Walker Community Room. Students who have completed 6th through 12th grade will have a Harry Potter party from noon to 2 p.m. The release party will include a Harry Potter costume and trivia contest as well as read-a-thon from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We'll also have a guest on the morning show July 20th to talk more about the events. Until then, if you need some Harry Potter fix, then check out the trailer for the new movie.

By the way, in case some of you just can't wait until the book is released and you are searching for spoilers, watch out. ABC News is reporting that hackers are unleashing a 'worm' that infects the computers of people looking for spoilers. The worm is masked as a file claiming to contain a copy of the new book. The worm then infects your computer with unwanted messages.

Devil's Den State Park

In all my years in Northwest Arkansas, for some reason, I had never visited Devil's Den State Park... that is until this past weekend. It was absolutely beautiful. I wish I would have visited years ago! My husband, Charles, our 9 month old, Jackson, and I camped along Lee Creek, which runs through the state park. We took these pictures during our many walks and hikes throughout the park. There is so much to do there for people of all ages. On Saturday, we walked around the Dam area and saw the waterfall, which Jackson was mesmerized by. Then we headed to the swimming pool to cool off. This was great... lots of families were there enjoying the nice afternoon. After a quick nap in the afternoon for all of us, we enjoyed a nice barbecue dinner. There's nothing better than the food you eat while camping! After we got up the next morning, we headed out on yet another walk... this time we decided to venture off the paved roads and leave the stroller behind for a trek to the creek. I brought along a sling for Jackson to ride in, which was pretty comfy for both of us, but after seeing a handy backpack carrier that another family with a young baby were using, we decided to upgrade... that way we can go on longer hikes than what a sling will allow us to do. Overall, it was a very relaxing and fun trip. It felt like we were hours away from home and reality (there's no cell phone service, so you really are secluded), even though you're just a few miles from home. We didn't explore any caves... we'll have to save that for when Jackson gets older. If you have kids a bit older, there are many activities to keep them entertained, whether it's just a day trip to the park or a weekend one. There are daily softball games, "Batty Crafts and Games" for kids, guided hikes, and much more. We're already making plans to go back before the summer is over.

7 new wonders of the world

Two blogs in one day... this is definitely a first! I just came across an article on the 7 new wonders of the world, which will be revealed Saturday... but it's not too late to get in your vote for which wonders you think should be included in the list. The deadline to vote is tonight at 8 pm EDT. So far, the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum in Rome and Peru's Machu Picchu are at the top of the list. Others included in the top 10 are the Acropolis in Greece, Chichen Itza pyramid in Mexico, Eiffel Tower in Paris, Easter Island, Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Taj Mahal in India and Jordan's ancient city of Petra. About 90 million people have voted so far. The number one spot could still change, so get in those votes! Just visit the new 7 wonders website to cast your vote.
Update: Here are the new 7 wonders -- Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer, Peru's Machu Picchu, and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid, the Great Wall of China, Jordan's Petra, the Colosseum in Rome and India's Taj Mahal.

7,871

That's how many words I read during the morning show today in just two hours. That doesn't even include not-scripted chat and our conversations during the commercials... you could probably add in another 1,000 words for all of that. It only took 87 words to tell you about a new study in the journal Science that compares the number of words spoken each day for men and women... and surprisingly, there wasn't much difference. On average, women speak about 16,215 words per day, while men speak about 15,669... that's only about a 550 word difference. The person who spoke the fewest number of words in the study was a man... his count.. just over 500 words all day! I think I say more than that in my first 30 minutes at work! The person who spoke the most words was also a man and his count came in at more than 45,000 words... makes you wonder what he does for a living. I would obviously be on the higher end of the study considering that I'm at the halfway point of the average by 7 am... but I do get an earlier start than most! :)

Get a whiff of this

We've probably all been there.. someone walks past you or sits near you with a little too much perfume or cologne on. What would normally smell really nice turns into a nightmare because it's just so strong. I'll even get a headache sometimes because of it. I've never done anything about it because it hasn't bothered me that bad, but one lady in Michigan is doing something about it. She's actually suing the city where she works because of a co-worker who wears too much perfume. She says it's in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act because she has a sensitive sense of smell. The woman says the strong smell is actually causing her to not work.. and even though she was apparently asked, the co-worker won't give up the perfume. What would you do if you were this woman? Is this a case of common courtesy... should the co-worker tone down the perfume a bit to help out a cubicle neighbor or should the woman suing the city grin and bear it?
