Spanking Illegal?

This story was making waves yesterday with a lot of parents. Lawmakers in Massachusetts are considering making it illegal for parents to spank their children. Growing up, just the thought of being spanked scared me straight! My punishments were usually time outs or having something taken away, like a toy or the TV as I got older. My all time favorite punishment that I just might use one day was having my door taken off because I slammed it one too many times! After not having a door for a while, I learned my lesson and never slammed it again! My friends still reminisce about coming over for a sleepover and having no door... it makes for a good laugh now, but as a 12 year old, I didn't think it was so funny! Back to the corporal punishment issue now... Many people, including the nurse who wrote the bill, view corporal punishment as child abuse. While many parents have already decided not to spank their children because of personal reasons, they still argue that the government would be taking too much control over what parents do in their own homes. Corporal punishment is already banned at school in 29 states, but all 50 states legally allow parents to spank their children. I'm sure a lot of people will be keeping an eye on how this case turns out in Massachusetts because if it passes, other states might follow suit.
