Exercising to Extend Your Life

In part 3 of our Living Longer series, we told you why exercising is so important when it comes to living a longer life. Adult Wellness Center Director Keri Wilkinson says strength training is key so you can continue doing the activities you enjoy throughout your life. Resistance bands are a great way to get in some strength training if you can't make it to the gym or you are traveling. They are light, easy to pack and stash away in your desk at work easily. Your goal for cardiovascular exercises should be at least 30 minutes of exercise, 3 days a week. Of course, as you age, you lose muscle mass and your bones can become weaker, so if you're concerned about what types of exercises would be good for you, Wilkinson says that walking and water aerobics are both easy on the joints.

If you're 50 or older , live anywhere in the area, and looking for a great place to work out at a low price, the Adult Wellness Center in Rogers is the place for you. I had never been to the facility before doing this story and was thoroughly impressed with the facility, quality of the workout equipment and variety of classes being offered. I only wish I could find a gym like that! The city of Rogers built and maintains the facility with the help of grants and local taxes, which is why the cost to join is us $25 a year. There are small fees to join some of the specialty classes though. They offer everything from your general workouts, to line dancing classes, yoga, pilates and water aerobics. Besides for the exercise portion of the facility, they also offer jewelry making classes, health education classes and pottery.
